The Wealth of Health: Do Not Become Too Busy Earning a Living to Protect Your Life
True wealth is more than income. This practical reflection invites hardworking Kenyans, entrepreneurs and families to invest a little time, attention and money in the health that carries every dream.

We spend years chasing money, opportunities and progress. Yet the body and mind carrying us through that journey also need an investment plan.
In Nairobi and across Kenya, many people begin the day before sunrise. Traders prepare their stock, parents organize their families, employees face long commutes, and entrepreneurs move from one responsibility to another. The pressure is understandable: rent is due, school fees must be paid, customers must be found and tomorrow must somehow be made more secure than today.
But in the rush to earn a living, it is easy to postpone the very thing that makes every other ambition possible: our health.
Health is not separate from wealth
We often measure wealth by what can be counted: income, savings, land, stock, a growing business or a better home. These things matter. Still, the ability to wake up with strength, think clearly, move without unnecessary pain, work productively and enjoy the people we love is also a form of wealth.
Good health is not a guarantee, and illness is never a personal failure. Some conditions arrive despite our best efforts. The point is not to blame anyone. It is to recognize that small, consistent acts of care can help us notice problems earlier, build resilience and make better use of the support available to us.
Do not become so busy building a future that you forget to protect the person who is meant to live in it.
Create a small health fund
Setting money aside for health can feel impossible when the household budget is already stretched. It does not have to begin with a large amount. A small, regular contribution can help cover transport to a clinic, a consultation, prescribed medicine or a routine check when the need arises.
Treat this money with the same seriousness as rent or business stock. Keep it separate where possible. Review your medical cover and understand what it does and does not provide before an emergency. If you support a family, discuss basic health planning together so that one person is not left trying to solve everything during a crisis.
Give health a place in your calendar
Money is only one part of the investment. Health also needs time. Many people wait until pain becomes unbearable or a symptom begins to interrupt work. Where possible, routine check-ups and timely professional advice can make concerns easier to understand and manage.
Set a reminder for the appointments that apply to you. Keep a simple record of important results, prescriptions, allergies and family medical history. If something in your body changes or persists, do not rely solely on internet searches, advertisements or advice from friends. A qualified healthcare professional is better placed to assess your individual situation.
The everyday habits that do not need luxury
Wellness is often marketed as an expensive lifestyle, but many useful habits are ordinary. They are not always easy, especially for people working long hours, yet they can be approached gradually.
- Rest: protect a realistic sleep routine as often as your circumstances allow.
- Movement: walk, stretch or choose an activity you can repeat consistently rather than an intense plan you quickly abandon.
- Food: build meals around affordable, varied and nourishing foods where possible, and be mindful of portions and heavily processed choices.
- Water: carry drinking water and make hydration part of the working day.
- Prevention: follow appropriate screening, vaccination and safety guidance from qualified professionals.
- Substance awareness: seek support if alcohol, tobacco or another substance is affecting your health, relationships or work.
The goal is not perfection. Missing a walk or eating one hurried meal does not undo everything. What matters is returning to habits that support you.
Your mind deserves care too
Financial strain, unemployment, caregiving and the uncertainty of running a business can quietly wear people down. Mental wellbeing is not weakness, laziness or lack of faith. Persistent anxiety, hopelessness, exhaustion or difficulty coping deserves attention just as physical pain does.
Make room for honest conversation with someone trustworthy. Rest without apologizing for being human. Reduce avoidable pressure where you can, and seek professional support when distress persists or feels overwhelming. Asking for help is not surrender; it is an act of responsibility.
For entrepreneurs and employers
A business cannot be truly healthy if every person inside it is exhausted. Entrepreneurs need boundaries, even when the business is young. Employees need reasonable breaks, safe working conditions and the freedom to raise genuine health concerns without humiliation.
You may not be able to introduce an expensive wellness programme, but you can begin with clean drinking water, sensible schedules, basic safety equipment, respectful communication and a culture that does not praise dangerous overwork. Caring for people is not only compassionate; it strengthens the business they are helping to build.
Start with one promise to yourself
You do not need to change your entire life this week. Choose one action: begin a small health fund, book an overdue appointment, take a regular walk, improve one daily meal, protect your bedtime or speak honestly about the stress you have been carrying.
Ambition is a good thing. Hard work can change a family and open doors for a community. But the richest future is not simply one in which we have earned more. It is one in which, as far as circumstances allow, we have also cared for the life, body and mind entrusted to us.
