The Mtaa Salama Initiative is a community flood-readiness programme bringing residents, businesses and public partners together to clear blocked drainage safely before the short rains.
Our first CSR programme
Prepared streets. Dignified local work.
Our proposed Eastlands pilot will identify priority drainage points with residents and the relevant Nairobi City County offices, equip a supervised local team, remove obstructing waste and ensure it is transported to an authorised disposal point.
Flood readiness
Reduce avoidable blockages before heavy rainfall and help communities report vulnerable drainage points early.
Paid local shifts
Create short-term, fairly paid work for selected unemployed adults from the community.
Transparent action
Publish the approved location, needs, expenditure, before-and-after evidence and measured results.
How the pilot will work
Coordinated from mapping to disposal
- Residents and local leaders help identify blocked or high-risk drainage points.
- Trina Shoppy seeks written coordination from the relevant County offices and qualified partners.
- Selected adult workers receive a safety briefing, PPE, tools and active supervision.
- Waste is bagged, contained, transported and disposed of through an approved route.
- Partners receive an impact report covering work completed, people engaged and funds used.

Heavy gloves, gumboots, mask, reflective wear and protective headgear.
Support dignified short-term income for a selected Eastlands resident.
Rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, sacks, cones and safety tape.
Support approved collection, transport and disposal after the activity.
Keep the supervised team supported throughout the workday.
Fund trained support, supplies and incident documentation.
Final sponsorship amounts will be published only after supplier quotations and partner approvals. No public fundraising will begin before the operating plan and payment controls are confirmed.

We welcome discussions with Nairobi City County, residents’ associations, emergency and humanitarian organisations, PPE and tool suppliers, waste handlers, employers, banks, insurers and responsible local businesses.
Safety comes before visibility
This programme will not place workers or volunteers inside deep drains or expose them to sewage, sharps, chemicals, unstable structures or other hazardous material. High-risk work will be isolated and referred to the relevant public authority or licensed specialist. Activities will require PPE, supervision, first aid, safe public access controls and authorised waste disposal.
